For our spring Day Retreat, I am excited to be coaching Gamzatti’s Temple Variation from the final act of Natalia Markova’s stunning production of La Bayadere, a classical ballet set in historical India.

A true ‘femme fatal’ character, the role of Gamzatti is a melting pot of confidence (to the point of arrogance), physical strength, pride, vengefulness and sensuality. A very demanding role with each variation throughout the ballet a showcase of stamina and technical proficiency. This variation, which takes place at the end of the ballet during the Temple Destruction scene is first time Gamzatti is shown as vulnerable behind the bravado of confidence which is revealed in her stage presence (more calm than previous acts) quick changes of bodily direction depicting uncertainty, light footwork with the majority of the solo danced purely en pointe as if she’s walking on eggshells, yet still with a subtle layer of seduction which is her desperate attempt to retain the attention of her lover Solor.

A very beautiful and emotional variation set to enchanting music by Ludwig Minkus, there will be plenty of opportunities to show off your pirouette and characterisation skills.

Here is former Royal Ballet Principal ballerina Dame Darcey Bussell dancing the role back in the 90’s, a memorable role for her.

This Day Retreat is tailored for adult ballet dancers at an Intermediate level and strong Improver level dancers who wish to challenge themselves are also welcome. The repertoire will be modified to suit the level stipulated.
